From donated laptops to home-grown seeds
Byodo again supports Malawi aid with company laptops
Mühldorf – 23.07.2024: Together with Malawi Hilfe Schwindegg, the organic company Byodo Naturkost is providing real help for self-help in Africa. Through the association, Byodo supports students in Malawi with used, refurbished laptops and smartphones, who would not be able to complete their academic education without this donation. The students are now taking their knowledge of soil improvement, natural fertilizers and seed production back to the village, where they are helping the farmers to achieve better harvests. Malawi Hilfe Schwindegg has been directly involved on site for a number of years. In addition to building drinking water wells, for example, the association also organizes educational sponsorships for students who have the qualifications but not the financial means for a university education. Byodo Naturkost is providing the hardware in collaboration with its partner company and IT service provider Agotech IT-Systemhaus GmbH: Because even in Malawi, studying is not possible without a laptop and smartphone. The chairman of Malawi Aid, Konrad Ess, personally collected the refurbished appliances from Byodo in Mühldorf shortly before his last trip to the Malawian village of Ngala. It is not only the donation as opposed to disposal that is an act of sustainability – the used company laptops have another sustainable effect in Malawi. This is because the students who work with it can already put the knowledge they have acquired at university into practice. Together with the farmers, they test measures to improve the soil, produce fertilizer in a natural way and grow their own seeds. This gives Malawian farmers more independence, means they have to buy in less and achieve better harvests that benefit the whole village. Stephanie Moßbacher, Managing Director of Byodo Naturkost, was fascinated by the developments described by Konrad Ess during his visit to Mühldorf: “It’s great to see how people are really able to help themselves more and more by supporting Malawi aid and what role the principles of organic farming play in this. If we can provide additional support with our reconditioned company equipment, we are more than happy to do so!”
